So you’ve just earned your very first hard-earned paycheck, but suddenly your employer or HR asked you to check income tax number. Perhaps you have registered for it before but you simply forgot your income tax number. In this article, we will provide you with a complete guide on how to check for your personal income tax number.

How to Check for The Income Tax Number in Malaysia?

When you register as a taxpayer in Malaysia, you will be provided with your own income tax number. Income tax number or known as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) will be provided to you by the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia or Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri.

If you have registered as a taxpayer with LHDN, there are several ways for you to check income tax number.

1. Check Income Tax Number Online through MyTax Website

You can easily check income tax number or TIN online at the MyTax website. At the MyTax Homepage, you may login by keying-in your NRIC and your password. After that, you will be prompted to your very own Tax Dashboard.

Your Tax Identification Number can easily be referred to at the top left corner of the dashboard.

What If You Already Registered But Forgot Your Password?

If you have forgotten your password on the MyTax website. Just follow the following steps:

      1. Open MyTax homepage and proceed to login by entering your NRIC number and then click on “Forgot Password”;
      2. Submit your registered email for a password reset;
      3. You will then receive a “Reset Password” link in your email;
      4. Click on the “Reset Password Link” to reset your password;
      5. Login with your new password, and proceed to check income tax number.

Please note that the reset link will only be valid for two (2) days. So be sure to reset your password as soon as you get the reset link in your email.

2. Check Income Tax Number Via HASiL Live Chat

Alternatively, you can easily check income tax number by accessing the HASiL Live Chat. The HASiL Live Chat can also be accessed via MyTax website.

3. Contacting The HASiL Care Line

In addition, you can contact HASiL Care Line directly to ask them to check income tax number for you. HASiL Care Line can be reached at +602-8911 1000 / +603-8911 1100 (for Overseas).

4. Submitting Customer Feedback Form

You can also check income tax number by submitting a Customer Feedback Form website by following the steps below:

  1. Visit this website then click “Enquiry” from the categories;
  2. After that, click “Individual Taxation” and click “Next”;
  3. Fill up all the details required and submit your enquiry to get your Tax Identification Number.

5. Checking at the Nearest HASiL Office

Another way for you to check income tax number is to physically head over to any LHDN branch nearest to you. You can check the nearest LHDN branch to you through this link.

What Happens If You Don’t Have Income Tax Number?

In Malaysia, the income tax number of Tax Identification Number (TIN) serves as the unique income tax identifier for taxpayers. Individuals aged 18 years old and above, and other entities such as Companies, Partnerships, Sole Proprietorship, Business Trust, and others are all required to be assigned with a TIN by the LHDN.

Do You Need to Register for a TIN?

Yes, you will need to register an income tax number if you fall within any of the categories listed below:

  • A single individual earning an income of more than RM34,001 per year (after EPF deduction);
  • A married individual and unemployed spouse that receive income in excess of RM46,001 per year;
  • An individual that earns income from a business;
  • A new employee subject to Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB income tax);
  • An individual with taxable income; or
  • An individual selling or buying real estate/properties in Malaysia.

If you have previously registered with LHDN, be aware that starting 2 January 2023, your new TIN will feature a different prefix of “IG”, replacing the previous “SG” or “OG”. The remaining digits of your TIN will remain the same.

For Non-Individuals, an additional “0” is added at the end of their existing TIN. You can see table below for comparison of the old TIN and the new TIN:

“0” is added at the end of new TIN. 

If an individual does not have a TIN, then the 12 digits of the individual’s NRIC Number would be used by the LHDN instead.
