Latest EV Road Tax Structure in Malaysia Starting 2026

Recently, the government revised the EV road tax structure for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia. Don’t fret, EV users will only have to pay the new road tax from January 2026. In the meantime, EV users will enjoy a tax exemption until the end of 2025! So, what is the road tax structure like for EVs now? Is it more expensive or cheaper? Have a read of this article to find out!

New Road Tax for EVs is Even Cheaper Than Normal Cars!

Yes, you read that right. The government has unveiled a much cheaper EV road tax than before. Previously, in 2019, the road tax structure was quite costly. Now, the revised road tax structure for EVs is significantly cheaper and even less expensive than the road tax for normal cars or internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Initially, BMW i4 eDrive40 M Sport owners would have had to pay RM3,724 for their road tax starting January 2026. However under the newly revised EV road tax, owners only have to pay RM305. That is 12 times cheaper than the previous rate!

What Are the Changes to the New EV Road Tax Structure?

Technically, the road tax structure is still based on the kilowatt (kW) power output of each vehicle, but now it is grouped into motor output power bands. The new pricing structure for EV road tax is divided into 11 bands:

What Are the Changes to the New EV Road Tax Structure?

Min Output (Watt) Max Output (Watt) EV Road Tax/Year Min (RM) EV Road Tax/Year Max (RM) Increment per 9,999W Block (RM)
1 100,000 20 70 10
100,001 210,000 80 280 20
210,001 310,000 305 575 30
310,001 410,000 615 1,065 50
410,001 510,000 1,140 2,040 100
510,001 610,000 2,165 3,515 150
610,001 710,000 3,690 5,490 200
710,001 810,000 5,715 7,965 250
810,001 910,000 8,240 10,940 300
910,001 1,010,000 11,265 14,415 350
1,010,001 and above 20,000

Each band covers a power range of 100,000 watts. The rates start at RM20 for the lowest band (covering electric motors with power from 1 watt to 100,000 watts). For each higher band, the fee increases by RM10, reaching a maximum of RM70 for motors up to 100 kW.

For power levels between 100,001 watts and 210,000 watts (210 kW), the road tax rates range from RM80 to RM280. The rate increases by RM20 for every additional 9.9 kW within this range. Overall, the new EV road tax pricing generally ranges from RM20 to RM20,000.

How to Calculate the Road Tax for My EV?

Here’s a straightforward guide on how to calculate the road tax for your EV:

  1. Find out the power output of your electric vehicle in watts. This information is typically available in your vehicle’s specifications.
  2. Locate which of the 11 power bands your EV falls into based on its power output. Each band covers a specific range of power output.
  3. Refer to the new road tax rates for your specific power band. The tax rate will depend on which band your vehicle falls into.

Let’s find out what the road tax for the BMW iX xDrive40 with a power output of 240,000 watts will be:

Since the power output is 240 kW, it falls into the band for power outputs between 210,001 watts and 240,000 watts. So the base rate is RM305. For power outputs between 210,001 watts and 240,000 watts, the road tax rates increase by RM30 for every additional 9.9 kW.

  • 210,001 – 220,000: RM305 (base rate)
  • 220,001- 230,000: RM335* (increment of RM30 for every additional 9.9 kW)
  • 230,001 – 240,000: RM365* (increment of RM30 for every additional 9.9 kW)
  • RM305 + RM60 = RM365

So, the road tax for the BMW iX xDrive40 with a power output of 240,000 watts would be RM365.
